In Saudi Arabia, Education, Professional Development, Scientific Research, and Policymaking in the field of Periodontology were never covered by a single umbrella. Promising efforts were undertaken by numerous bodies pertaining to different sectors, namely the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education. Isolated scientific activities were the main source of Periodontology-related knowledge exchange. Uncoordinated research activities were the trend as far as updates and developments were concerned. All these activities were indeed of significant value to the improvement of individual practices. However, systematic efforts leading to clear recommendations were clearly lacking, and with the growing number of Periodontal Specialists, Practitioners, and Residents in the kingdom and neighboring countries, the need for a supporting mother entity in the field of Periodontology arose.
The Saudi Society of Periodontology (SSP) was established following the approval of the Board of Trustees of the Saudi Commission for Health Specialists (SCHS), chaired by His Excellency the Minister of Health last 16 Ramadan 1439H, corresponding to 31 May 2018. SSP is the first society in the entire region to thoroughly focus on Periodontology and Dental implantology-related issues.
In particular, areas of interest include (but are not limited to): Periodontal diseases and methods of their treatment; Pre-prosthetic reconstruction of the alveolar bone and periodontal tissues; Dental Implantology and treatment of associated complications and peri-implant diseases; and Treatment of esthetic defects related to tissues surrounding the teeth and dental implants.
